Addressing a Critical Challenge
In a groundbreaking study published in Advanced Functional Materials, researchers have engineered novel aramid aerogel fibers (SEAAFs) with a unique core-shell structure to overcome the longstanding conflict between superior thermal insulation and mechanical robustness in protective textiles. Traditional aerogel fibers, while offering excellent insulation, are notoriously fragile (typically 0.5–41.0 MPa), limiting their use in durable fabrics—a critical issue given that over 22.8 million occupational injuries annually are linked to thermal stress in extreme environments.
Innovative Core-Shell Design
By employing a two-step wet-spinning coagulation process (acid bath for rapid shell formation followed by water bath for slow core gelation), the team created fibers with a dense, highly ordered outer layer and a porous, amorphous 3D network core. This ingenious structure combines the best of both worlds: the porous core provides superb insulation, while the dense shell delivers the mechanical strength needed for textile manufacturing.
Record-Breaking Performance
The resulting SEAAFs achieve a record fracture stress of 64.3 MPa and 30% elongation, allowing them to be knotted and woven on automatic looms—a first for aerogel fibers. Despite this strength, they maintain exceptional thermal insulation with a low thermal conductivity of 28.3 mW·m⁻¹·K⁻¹, 98% porosity, and an ultra-low fabric areal density of just 46.3 g/m². A mere 0.8 mm thick fabric provides excellent thermal protection at both 200°C and -15°C, rivaling much thicker conventional materials.
Wide-Ranging Applications
This breakthrough opens vast possibilities for next-generation protective gear:
- High-Temperature Workwear: For firefighters, metallurgy workers, and welders
- Extreme Cold Weather Gear: For polar expeditions and cold-storage operations
- Aerospace & Military: As lightweight insulation in aircraft cabins and specialized uniforms
- Smart Textiles: For developing advanced intelligent thermal clothing
The combination of unprecedented comfort, safety, and durability positions this material as a game-changer for personal thermal protection across industries.
